Two Poems (devorah major)

music of parting

“and if I ever leave you, you can say I told you so” - Donny Hathaway

love’s truth

is not an off-key rant

belted out lines

of demeaning insults

played on an out-of-tune piano

love may, at times, intone

confusion

disappointment

anger

dis

ease

but the tender love

the unbridled, passionate love

the laughter love

the love eager to know

the other as self

is a love

that does not deceive

does not strangle

does not threaten to take

another’s last breath

in its name

there is no music to that song

whatever you might call

your feelings toward me

you may not call it love

backwards reflections

memory becomes a haze of loss

was there truly ever laughter

or was it always growls scowls

acid accusations spat

into once fertile ground

tender spring blossoms

that could not survive

the withering winter storms

were hands held almost everywhere

walking over grassy knolls

across swinging bridges

into sun-soaked music festivals

or was it mostly fists with dry intent

held up to but never quite touching

the cheeks those hands used to stroke

one wants to hold onto

some thin, golden thread

of smile-rich memory

so those years are not only

a shrivel of possibilities

a tremble of betrayal

but reaching back

it is hard to see much

but lead-dripping clouds

before the heady flight

toward freedom
