Survival & Beyond is committed to telling the varied and important stories and experiences of survivors. We welcome submissions of prose, poetry, photography, visual artwork, and hybrid pieces. Your submission can be about your survivor story, but it doesn’t have to be.

Reading Periods

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis in each reading period.

Issue 4 / Summer 2027

Accepting work: July 1st - August 31st, 2026
Contributors notified: By October 1st, 2026
Issue released: Mid-late July 2027

Issue 4 of Survival & Beyond seeks creative work that explores and connects to the theme of “home.” "Home" serves as a lens for examining a concept, a sensation, and a place we’ve all uniquely experienced. The theme of “home” can be interpreted as a physical structure, a person, a mental or emotional state, a feeling of belonging, or displacement, and so much more.

We welcome submissions of prose, poetry, photography, visual artwork, and hybrid pieces from survivors of domestic violence/relationship abuse to include in our fourth issue of Survival & Beyond. All submissions should be submitted by survivors of domestic violence or relationship abuse.

Submission Guidelines

Who can submit:
- Anyone who identifies as a survivor of domestic violence and/or relationship abuse and is living in the U.S. is welcome to submit work.
- Contributors who were featured in Issue 3 of Survival & Beyond, please refrain from submitting for this submission period. Previous contributors will be welcome to submit work to future issues.

Types of work accepted:
- Written: Essays, stories, poetry, multi-genre pieces, etc.
- Visual artwork: Photography (including photographs of three-dimensional artwork), paintings, drawings, etc.
- Hybrid pieces (containing visual art AND written elements): Comics, collages, etc.

Length of submissions:
- Prose: 2000 words max
- Poetry and/or multi-genre pieces: Up to 4 pages for poetry and/or multi-genre pieces.
- Visual artwork: Up to 4 pages.
- Hybrid pieces (containing visual art AND written elements, such as comics): Up to 4 pages.

Contributors should submit ONE piece total for publication.

Submission formatting:
- Text ONLY: .doc/.docx, .pdf, .txt files
  - Prose submissions should be double-spaced and in 12pt font, Times New Roman.
  - Poetry should be single-spaced and in 12pt font, Times New Roman.
- Visual artwork (including hybrid pieces with text): .tiff, .xps, .jpg/jpeg, .png files
  - NO PDFs!
  - One piece of artwork per page.

Please DO NOT INCLUDE:
- Any contact information in your submission (address, phone number, full name, email, etc). Your first name may be used throughout your submission.

Language requirements:
- We currently accept submissions in English and Spanish.
- We do NOT accept submissions that use any hateful and/or discriminatory language directed at individuals or groups. Submissions using this type of language will be disqualified.
  - Discriminatory language used by the contributor as a way to reclaim it is acceptable.

We do NOT accept work that was in any way created by artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This includes but is not limited to:
- ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini
- AI Poem Generators such as: Poem Analysis, DeepAI Poem Generator
- AI Art Generators

Deadline for submission: August 31st, 2026
- The submission window may close sooner than Aug. 31st, since submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis. This means we will no longer accept submissions for this issue once we've accepted our target amount.
- You will hear from us no later than October 1st, 2026 about inclusion in this issue.

Can I submit something that was previously published elsewhere?

Can I submit my work anonymously?

Yes, you can publish your work anonymously, under a pseudonym, or under your real name. On the submission form, you will be asked for both your real name AND for the name you wish to publish under. Your personal information will not be shared outside of the anthology team without your explicit permission.

We also advise you to not identify anybody else by name in your submission. If your submission contains identifiable names, locations, or other details, we recommend changing them. Our reviewing team can provide feedback and suggestions around changing names of people/locations/etc. in your submission.

Do I keep the rights to the piece if it’s included?
